Dating

What
is Speed Dating?
Speed Dating is a quick, exciting and non-pressured way to meet people.
In one evening, you'll meet a variety of people, in brief, one-on-one
conversations. You can expect to meet around 20 people in one night! There
are a number of companies that organise speed dating events.
What
are the advantages of Speed Dating?
The speed dating format means that you get to meet many
people on a single night in a series of mini dates. Everyone knows what
they are there for, so you eliminate the need for uncomfortable ice-breaking
and you avoid nightmare 2-3-hour blind dates with someone you simply don't
like. And you avoid expensive dinners and lunches with people where there
is simply no chemistry.
How
does Speed Dating work?
A
group of singles people gather at a cafe or bar that has been rented out
for the evening by the organisers. The venue is filled with "tables
for two," and each table will be numbered. You will have a set amount
of time (usually a few minutes).
At the end
of the set time, participants will be notified (by the ringing of a bell,
playing of music or other pre-determined event) that it is time to move
on to the next date. Participants are asked to write on a form if they
would be interested in seeing this person again. This usually involves
simply ticking a 'yes' or 'no' box, "hit" or "miss"
or even "date", "friend", "miss".
The men
will then get up from their seats and move to the next table, where another
woman is waiting to meet them. Depending on the number of people at the
event, there may be a short break during the evening.
What
happens after the event?
If both sides
ticked the 'yes' box, the organizers will let the participants know which
matches have been made, and give each side the other's email address and/or
phone number.
How
can you form an opinion of somone in just a few minutes?
Remember, you're on a mini-date not a full blown night out.
Most people form an opinion of people within the first few minutes of
meeting them. Speed dating is a great way to see if you'd be interested
in a full date or just more conversation later.
Sometimes
your very short meeting will be too long. But at least it's only a few
minutes, not a few hours!
In 5 minutes most people can tell if there's physical chemistry, if they
like the way someone speaks, if the person is mature and intelligent,
and if they want to know more. This means a tick on the list, before you
move on to your next mini-date.
What
are the disadvantages to Speed Dating?
You will be entering into a number of mini blind dates.
You won't know anything about the other participants. You don't know if
they are single, you don't know if they are who they say they are or that
they do what they say they do. The only thing you can hope is that everyone
there is being as honest as you are.
Can
you pay at the door or do you need to sign-up in advance?
You usually have to sign up in advance. Sign up as soon
as you know you can attend an event to ensure your place at the speed
dating event.
What
should you wear?
You are out on a date. Dress to impress!
What
should I not talk about at the dating event?
The organisers may have their own guidlines, but in general,
1) Don't ask anyone for their contact information, their phone number,
last name, e-mail address, business card, address etc.
2) Don't ask anyone if they would like to have another date (but if you
do meet someone you like, by all means tell them you will be ticking their
name on your card
3) Don't ask any sexually explicit question
4) Don't use lewd language
5) Don't say anything that might be interpreted as threatening or as sexual
harassment
